Adult age at death estimation: methods tested on Thai postcranial skeletal remains

چکیده

Scientific literature frequently reports that age-at-death estimation standards developed on European and North American populations are less effective when used genetically distant populations. Ultimately, this paper aims to inform forensic anthropologists bioarchaeologists of the most appropriate methods use Southeast Asian skeletal remains by evaluating studies have tested replicability accuracy adult age Thai target samples. Results show using pelvis recorded highest up 93%, but only broad ranges (±2 SD). Most produced least bias inaccuracy in young adults considerably underaged older adults. Overall biases inaccuracies tended be lower for males than females. The sternal rib end method showed weakest correlation with chronological age. Methods prediction equations regression analyses derived from samples standard errors ranging 9.5 13.9 years (using vertebrae femora). these were deemed too imprecise useful cases. best way forward understand wide range morphological variation is future evaluate influence body size, activity patterns, socioeconomic status, nutrition, health aging how it differs between geographically

Age estimation in archaeological skeletal remains: evaluation of four non-destructive age calculation methods.

Estimation of age at death is an essential part of reconstructing information from skeletal material. The aim of the investigation was to reconstruct the chronological age of an archaeological sample from Croatia using cranial skeletal remains as well as to make an evaluation of the methods used for age estimation. For this purpose, four age calculation methods were used: palatal suture closure...

Estimation of adult skeletal age-at-death: statistical assumptions and applications

We examine the statistical assumptions underlying different techniques of estimating the age-at-death of a skeleton from one or more age indicators. The preferred method depends on which property of the distribution of the data in the reference sample is preserved in the skeleton to be aged. In cases where the conditional distribution of age given indicator is preserved, we provide ‘look-up’ ta...

Utility of the frontonasal suture for estimating age at death in human skeletal remains.

This project evaluated the utility of the frontonasal suture for estimating age at death. Utilizing human remains of known age at death with varying degrees of fusion, curated at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, data were collected from the ectocranial surface of 522 crania; 68 of thes...

The influence of body size on adult skeletal age estimation methods.

Accurate age estimations are essential to archaeological and forensic analyses. However, reliability for adult skeletal age estimations is poor, especially for individuals over the age of 40 years. This is the first study to show that body size influences skeletal age estimation. The İşcan et al., Lovejoy et al., Buckberry and Chamberlain, and Suchey-Brooks age methods were tested on 764 adult ...
